Game: Rise of the Tomb Raider
Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows
Release Date: November 2015
- Creativity: You mean to tell me that Lara Croft can be a bad ass protagonist without the slutty outfits and exaggerated bust line?!?! Game makers, we applaud you. Not only for ignoring the old archetype of everyone’s favorite action babe, but also for creating a plot of Hunger Games meets Assassin’s Creed proportions.
- Execution: While it was cool to run through the plot and give us a taste of gameplay, Crystal Dynamics may have gone into a little too much detail. The narration definitely went too far — the music choices alone could have carried us through. As for the graphics, after sitting in on a few animation classes in grad school, I know firsthand how hard it is to portray snow via CGI. So I give the graphics in this trailer an A. It’s no Halo 5, but by golly they’re getting there.
- Impact: I’m buying this game (and maybe also being Lara Croft for Halloween).
On the whole, I’m really digging this new installment of Tomb Raider and was impressed by the creative choices. Definitely makes my Christmas list.
